The Day of Your Road: Preparing Your Car

You’ve planned for weeks and now you’re ready for your long-anticipated road trip. You’ve got repairs finished on the car, fluid levels are checked, and the tires have been inflated. Now, it’s time to take one final look to make sure you’re ready for your trip.

 1.    Make sure you wash and vacuum your car. Be it reality or not, clean cars seem to run better. Plus, you’ll be more comfortable as you travel in a clean car.

 2.    Fill the gas tank. Make sure you top your gas off before you leave. Nobody wants to stop five minutes into the trip to fill the tank. Take a few minutes before you pack to make sure you’re ready to go.

 3.    Buy an atlas. If you don’t already have a road atlas, buy one. You’ll save hours and get out of traffic jams by knowing a few alternative routes.

 4.    Load evenly. When loading up your car, make sure suitcases and heavy objects are packed forward in the trunk and distribute weight evenly. And remember, you’re car isn’t a superhero, so don’t overload.

 5.    Check tire pressure. Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Poorly inflated tires can affect your gas mileage. One more time before you leave, take a look at those tires.

 6.    And most importantly, relax! If you’ve prepared before hand, you’ll have nothing to worry about. Sometimes, emergencies come up and there’s really nothing much you can do about that. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your trip!

Road trips are great fun, especially in the summer time. Get out on the road and enjoy the scenery as you explore the country. Remember if you’ve prepared before hand, you’ll have nothing to worry about. Grab some treats, roll down the windows, and have fun!

How to Handle Car Problems on a Road Trip

Nothing spoils a road trip faster than car problems. Accidents happen, but if you are prepared to handle the accidents and emergencies, you’ll get through the crisis much faster and be on your way to enjoying your trip again.

If you have a flat tire or your car overheats, pull over to the side of the road and get out of the way. With any car problem, you want to make sure you are out of traffic.

Turn on your flashers. This lets others cars know you are having a problem so they are more cautious as they drive by. Emergency flashers are especially important if you have car problems when it’s dark.

Call for help. This is where having a cell phone comes in handy. If you don’t have a cell phone, look for a roadside telephone. If no phone is available, sit in your car and wait for help.

Raise your hood to let other cars know you are pulled over and need assistance. This is a nice way to let others know you need help so they can call the police.

If another motorist stops to help, it’s usually better to just stay in your car and ask him to call for help. Acknowledge the help and then stay in your car until the police or tow truck arrives.

Most importantly, stay calm. Panicking will not help you get your car fixed any sooner. Think clearly and stay in control of the situation.

Remember, you are your own best protection. Follow these safety tips if you find yourself with some car trouble on your next road trip.
