There is something about train journeys that makes these quite an adventure. From early childhood, there are many people who fall in love with train journeys and this passion stays with these people for the rest of their lives. No matter how old they become, they invariably come back to the train journeys that  have given them so much joy over the years. This is also true given the fact that airline journeys and hanging around in airports is no longer considered cool and could be seriously harmful to world ecology.  For many, an airplane journey may be fast and cheap too, it misses out on the landscape below that is there to be seen and savored.

If you do not go on train journeys, you do not get to see the rolling mountains, gushing streams, green meadows and the many bounties of nature that are there for everyone to look at and enjoy. This is where train journeys score big time over airplane journeys any day. There lies the inspiration for compiling the list of the 10 best train journeys of all time, which have been compiled with a lot of care and after huge amounts of research. From the Trans-Siberian rail link to the highest China-Tibet line to cross country lines across Australia and India, you will be amazed at the wide variety of train lines that feature in this list.

50 states run by endurance runner

Running is serious business for some folks. These people will never take no for an answer or get scared by the prospect of running long distances. That is why such people call distance running as their career. Running gives them a high and keeps them going to reach greater distances and be known as an endurance runner. Part of the magic of being an endurance runner is to watch the miles melting in the background. Whether they are cheered by people or not does not matter to the endurance runner. All that an endurance runner wants is to keep on going, and making an entry in the record books. One such lady is Lisa Smith-Batchen who has decided to run 50 miles in 50 states of USA.

The thing about Lisa is that she is an endurance runner of repute, and has many years of running behind her. But now she is running not for personal glory, but to raise awareness about many charitable causes in the country. This is a very noble cause, and something which should be encouraged. After all, most people run only for their own personal fame and name. But this is not true of Lisa who really wants to help others by running.

There are some expeditions that get better with age. As the years go by, there is something mystical as well as iconic that gets associated with these expeditions. One of such expeditions is the Trans-Antarctica expedition which has lasted as many as twenty years. 20 years back, there was an expedition of six explorers who were from 6 different countries that conducted the expedition across the continent of Antarctica. This was all of 3741 miles long, and was quite an adventure to start with. The expedition lasted as many as 221 days, and it started and also ended during the winter in Antarctica. The first trip used dog sleds and this was the first and the last time digs were used.

The very first expedition cost as much a $12 million, which is the largest budget ever to be attempted. This is a budget that will not be breached anytime soon. There were a lot of challenges along the way, including 69 day long blizzard, almost one fourth of the duration of this amazing expedition. The whole story of this expedition is that of grit, determination and a never say die attitude. There are so many people who still remember this expedition, 20 years down the line, a sit pushed the very limits of human endurance.

If you want to be part of the Rhodes Trail Run 2010, its better you start early and get on with the application process. The run is quite a few months away, but the entries to this legendary race in South Africa need to be filed soon. Personal invitations to this annual event have been dispatched already and if you are a distance endurance runner of any reckoning, you should be hitting the adventure trail on the Rhodes trail run. The event will take place on July 3rd and it begins and ends in Rhodes in South Africa. En route, you will come across some of the most challenging and daunting terrain that you will ever encounter on any trail.

The Rhodes Trail run also has the added difficulty factor of the weather, which is always so very unpredictable. There are high winds, icy trails and even snowy conditions to add to the thrill of the trail. In addition, there is also the altitude. The race starts at a height of 1,800 meters and could go up to as high as 2,68o meters, at the highest point. All of this is a heady test of endurance and physical fitness. The weak and the faint hearted can at best just be spectators at the race.

The Appalachian Trail is one of the most daunting trails of all time. The trail is quite tough as well as challenging for fully able trekkers and adventurers. The trail is all of 2,174 miles. It runs through the Appalachian Mountain range in the eastern part of the US. It runs from Maine and ends in Georgia, traversing across 12 states in its course. There are many single hikers who have found the going very tough on this trial, and to think that a blind hiker would try to cross the trail, just boggles the mind. The hiker in question is Mike Hanson, 44 years old. Mike started on the trail from the Georgia end and he hopes to complete his hike across the whole trail in around 7 months time, ending the hike in Maine.
The only device that would be helping Mike on the Appalachian Trail is a GPS device, which is connected to his phone and which helps him navigate the huge journey. The gadget is quite specialized and has 32 hours of battery life. It is adapted to read the GPS info out to the hiker, which is extremely helpful. Mike has plans of covering around 15 miles every single day, to keep to the target of 7 months.

Helium Jacket Review

It is my pleasure to review outdoor and expedition gear from time to time, as it gives me the opportunity to look at what is available currently and also to check it out, in depth. This is one of the main reasons why I was happy to do a review of the OR Helium Jacket, which seemed to hold a lot of promise. But it seems this had a lot of expectations that it had to live up to, after all.  For one, the OR Helium jacket was extremely light, almost as if it were too light for comfort. The light weight nature of the jacket is such that you need to really wait for some warmer weather before you can even expect to put it on. If there is any snow , or cold winds, the jacket would prove to be no good at all. This is why you need to ensure that you have a good look at the temperature outside and then consider having a look at the jacket.

On the other hand, the helium jacket is all so light that it can fit into your backpack so snugly that you won’t even know it’s hidden in there. It is also totally waterproof and allows some air in, which are great in warmer weather. Even the zippers are quite water resistant, so if you get caught in the rain, there’s no need to worry.
