Getting to the North Pole all alone is no easy task. And if you are a woman, well it could be so very daunting. While lesser mortals can get deterred, it had not deterred Christina Franco. This London based Italian lady has determined not to give up on here plans to go to the Geographic North Pole this year. Her expedition will start off from Cape Discovery in Canada and she plans to travel for 480 miles in about just a week. It’s not like Christina is novice. In 2009, during the Arctic season, she had planned to get ahead, but then there was a failure in her stores that came in the way of effective expedition. But Christina is one tough cookie, who will not give up anytime soon.

She went to the last degree journey to the Pole, which was like a training exercise. She was also training in Norway, but it seems what she encountered in Norway was nothing like what she will face in her journey to the North Pole, all alone. There is likely to be a lot of ice rubble along the way and these are created when the huge slabs of ice in the Arctic keep dashing and crashing against each other violently.

Wait till March for the Inca Trail to reopen

If you want to check out the Inca Trail this year, it seems like you will have to wait till March. There have been repots as to how more than 1,300 visitors had been trapped at Machu Picchu a few weeks back. The cause of this was huge flooding, which had also caused destruction of the railway which led to the ancient mountain fortress that everyone just loves to see up there in the Inca Trail. It was also reported that the Inca Trail was hit by more than 40 landslides and the tracks got covered such that even the train could not get the trapped tourists back to safety.

It is also possible to take the Inca Trail on foot, hiking through the majestic Andes, which would lead to the site at Machu Picchu. The hike is for all of four days and on some ways you enjoy the journey through the Inca Trail almost as much as the destination itself. While the trail is generally closed through February for repairs and maintenance, this year it may get extended through March due to the flooding that had taken place. So if you want to take the Inca Trail and check out Machu Picchu, do make you plans April onwards only, to avoid cancellations and disappointment.

Astronauts able to send photos from space

It is said that if you have an enjoyable experience and are unable to share it with anyone else, then your joy and delight are half stolen away from you. This is precisely what seem to be the sentiments of astronauts who are now able to send photos from space. This has been made possible because the International Space Station was upgraded to have a wireless network whereby astronauts were allowed to send personal mails and communication. One of the first things that the astronauts chose to do was tweet back from space and not only messages, but they have also chosen to spice it all up by sending in photos taken by them from space.

Some of the pictures sent in include Mt. Fuji in Japan and also Mt. Kilimanjaro which are just out of the world. In addition there are quite a few pictures of splendid Maldives. It almost seems unbelievable but the sight of places on Earth looks so very different and even more alluring seen from outer space. When it comes from astronauts who are orbiting so many kilometers out in space over earth, the feeling is not only quite sentimental but also extremely eye catching. Maybe that’s what is prompting astronauts to send photos in from space.

Tourists enjoying their vacation in Machu Picchu in Peru got trapped in the beautiful Incan city due to heavy torrential rainfall. The Guardian reported that rainfall was followed by immense flooding and landslides, stranding the tourists and blocking any further visits through trains or other means. More than 40 landslides, killing two local residents and completely cutting the transportation off for near future, have been reported so far. Around 1500 visitors are said to be trapped in the city for the last couple of days, and will be rescued by the airlifting team. It is said that 10 helicopters have been allocated to the rescue team for this mission. All the tourists stranded in Machu Picchu are reported to be fine. Most of them have booked rooms in a nearby hotel, which is about to run out of food and water.

Tourists can reach Machu Picchu either by hiking or taking a train to the city. The train journey being only 70 miles long is more popular among the tourists, whereas hiking along the Inca trail can take at least four days to reach Machu Picchu.
